From the outside, disposable vapes look simple: a small housing, no button, just inhale. Behind this simplicity, however, is finely tuned technology. If you understand how your device works, you avoid common mistakes, get a more consistent flavour and can decide better whether a disposable or a rechargeable pod system suits your everyday life. In this article you will learn how disposable vapes are built, what affects vapour and flavour, and what the law in Switzerland says.
Key points at a glance
| Point | Details |
|---|---|
| Closed system | Draw sensor, battery, coil and liquid tank work together automatically. |
| No maintenance | The device is used until the liquid runs out and then disposed of. |
| Draw technique matters | Calm, steady puffs give the best flavour. |
| Law and environment | Sale only from age 18, bans in some cantons; dispose of as electronic waste. |
How disposable vapes are built and how they work
At first glance, a disposable vape is little more than a colourful stick. Inside, however, several components work together so that every puff delivers consistent vapour.
From puff to vapour
The process starts as soon as you draw on the mouthpiece. A sensor in the device, usually a pressure sensor, detects the negative pressure and activates the battery. The battery powers the coil, a heating element. The coil heats up in a fraction of a second and vaporises the e-liquid, which reaches the heating surface via a wicking material (absorbent cotton or similar fibres). The vapour flows through the air channel to the mouthpiece. There are no moving parts and no manual switching on: control is fully automatic.
The main components
| Component | Function | Specific to disposable vapes |
|---|---|---|
| Draw sensor | Detects negative pressure when you inhale | No button needed |
| Battery | Powers the coil | Built in |
| Coil | Heats the liquid until it vaporises | Pre-installed, not replaceable |
| Wicking material | Carries liquid to the coil | Usually cotton |
| Liquid tank | Holds the pre-filled liquid | Not refillable, max. 2 ml in Switzerland |
| Air channel and mouthpiece | Guide the vapour to the mouth | Usually designed for a tight draw |
Each component has a clearly defined task. If one fails or the device is used incorrectly, the whole experience suffers. Basics and terminology are also explained in our beginner’s guide to vaping.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Blocking the airflow: if you cover the air vent with your fingers, the vapour becomes weaker or stops altogether.
- Drawing too hard or too fast: a very strong puff pulls in more air than the wick can supply liquid. The result is a dry, bitter taste known as a “dry hit”.
- Puffs that are too long: puffs of more than three to four seconds overheat the coil, the liquid is used up faster and the flavour suffers.
- Heat: high temperatures, for example in a car in summer, make the liquid thinner and can affect the electronics.
A calm, steady puff of two to three seconds usually gives the best result.
How disposable vapes differ from other devices
Put a disposable vape next to a pod system or a box mod and the differences quickly become clear: in design, use and cost.
| Feature | Disposable vape | Pod system | Mod |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maintenance | None | Low (pod or coil change) | High |
| Refilling | Not possible | Yes, depending on the system | Yes |
| Charging | No for classic models | Yes | Yes |
| Getting started | Very easy | Easy | Demanding |
| Cost with regular use | Higher | Lower | Lowest |
| Device lifespan | Single use | Months to years | Years |
Important: devices such as the ELFA Pro or Aroma King SMART are not disposables but rechargeable pod systems with replaceable pods. You will find an overview in our pod systems collection.
When a disposable vape makes sense
- For adult smokers without prior knowledge: no setup, no learning curve.
- On the go: you need neither liquid bottles nor a charging cable.
- Occasional use: if you rarely vape, you don’t need a device that requires maintenance.
- Trying new flavours: without buying a whole system.
- As a backup: while your main device is charging.
If you vape a lot every day, a rechargeable system is cheaper in the long run and produces less waste. More on this in the vape beginner’s guide for Switzerland.
Why refilling and coil changes are not intended
The disposable concept relies on being a closed unit. Liquid volume, battery capacity and coil are matched at the factory. Parameters such as “resistance” or “wattage”, which you set yourself on a mod, are fixed on a disposable. The most important technical terms are listed in our vape terminology overview.
What affects vapour and flavour
A disposable vape can taste perfect at first and become weaker after many puffs. There are technical reasons for this.
Capillary action instead of a pump
The wicking material draws the liquid to the coil purely through capillary action. There is no pump. If you puff very quickly in succession or hold the device awkwardly, not enough liquid flows in. The next puff hits a half-dry coil and tastes bitter or burnt.
Influencing factors at a glance
- Position: held upright, the liquid flows evenly.
- Draw technique: drawing slowly and steadily gives the wick time.
- Outside temperature: cold makes the liquid thicker, so vapour is weaker until the device warms up.
- Storage: direct sunlight and heat alter the liquid. Room temperature away from sunlight is ideal.
- Fill level: the emptier the tank, the weaker the last puffs.
Avoiding dry hits
- Let the device stand upright for a moment before the first puff so the liquid can spread.
- Take short breaks between puffs.
- If the flavour changes noticeably, the liquid is usually almost used up. The device should then be disposed of.

Law and environment in Switzerland
Disposable vapes are not banned nationally in Switzerland, but the legal situation is evolving.
- Sale from 18: the Tobacco Products Act (TabPG) has applied since 1 October 2024. E-cigarettes with and without nicotine may only be sold to people aged 18 and over, including online with age verification.
- Tax: since 1 October 2024, a tax of CHF 1.00 per ml has been levied on disposable e-cigarettes, including nicotine-free devices. Details in the article Vape tax in Switzerland.
- Tank volume: on 14 April 2026 the Federal Supreme Court confirmed that disposables may contain no more than 2 ml of liquid and may not be extended by additional tanks.
- Cantons: Valais and Geneva have cantonal bans on disposable e-cigarettes. Other cantons are discussing rules. The federal parliament has called for a national ban; no date of entry into force has been set yet. The current status is covered in Disposable vape bans: cantons at a glance.
Disposing of them properly
Disposable vapes contain plastic, electronics and a lithium battery. None of this belongs in household waste or in nature.
- Disposable vapes are electronic waste and belong at a collection point for electrical devices and batteries.
- Retailers that sell such devices take them back.
- Use the device until it is empty so no liquid leaks.
- Check the rules in your municipality.

Conclusion
Disposable vapes are technically more refined than their reputation suggests. Their simplicity is a deliberate design choice: unpack, use, dispose of correctly. For occasional use or on the go, this can be practical. If you vape every day, disposables cost more and create more waste; a rechargeable pod system is usually the better choice. When buying, consider brand, liquid volume, nicotine strength and flavour, and take empty devices to a collection point.

Frequently asked questions about disposable vapes
How long does a disposable vape last?
That depends on the liquid volume, the battery and how you draw. In Switzerland the tank of disposables is limited to 2 ml. Refilling or extending it is not intended.
Why does the vapour sometimes taste burnt or weak?
Usually it is due to puffs that are too long or too fast, almost empty liquid or cold. Because the liquid only flows by capillary action, the coil can briefly run dry if you puff hastily.
Are disposable vapes allowed in all cantons?
No. Valais and Geneva have cantonal bans. Nationally, disposable vapes are not banned; throughout Switzerland they may only be sold to people aged 18 and over.
Can I refill or reuse my disposable device?
No. Disposable vapes are not built to be refilled and belong at a collection point for electronic waste after use.
Note: nicotine products are for adults aged 18 and over only. Nicotine is addictive. If you don’t smoke, don’t start.
