In short: For many adult vapers, flavour is the main reason for choosing a particular liquid or device. It also affects how often and how intensely people vape. In Switzerland, flavoured vapes are permitted, sales have only been allowed from age 18 since 1 October 2024, and some cantons now ban disposable e-cigarettes. Here you will learn what flavours do, what to watch out for and which rules apply.

Why flavours matter in vaping

Taste is not a minor detail when vaping. While cigarettes offer a very limited range of flavours, e-cigarettes cover everything from fruit and desserts to cool menthol variants and classic tobacco profiles. Many vapers choose their product by flavour first and only then by brand or device. That explains why the variety of flavours on the market has grown so strongly.

The most popular categories can be roughly divided into five groups:

  • Fruit flavours: watermelon, mango, strawberry and tropical blends are perennial favourites.
  • Dessert flavours: vanilla, caramel or chocolate for those who prefer something sweeter.
  • Menthol and ice: a cool, fresh mouthfeel, often combined with fruit.
  • Tobacco profiles: for adult smokers looking for a familiar taste.
  • Specialities: from energy-drink notes to combinations such as lychee-mint.

You will find an overview of popular flavours in our article on popular vape flavours and in the article Discovering vape flavours.

What vapers particularly value in a flavour:

  • Intensity: How present is the taste when inhaling and exhaling?
  • Authenticity: Does mango taste like mango or more like a sweet?
  • Harmony with nicotine: Does the flavour stay pleasant at higher nicotine strengths?
  • Consistency: Does the taste stay stable over the whole life of a pod?

How flavours influence consumption

Flavours change not only what you taste, but also how often and how intensely you vape. If a taste is particularly pleasant, it is easy to take more frequent or longer puffs. This also increases the amount of nicotine absorbed – at the same nicotine strength in the liquid. Many people underestimate this connection.

This is especially clear with disposable devices: they are designed for smooth vapour and a constantly intense taste. Experts point out that a pleasant flavour can mask the perception of one’s own consumption. Vaping then feels more like enjoyment than habit, even though nicotine is addictive.

Factors that shape your consumption:

  1. Choice of flavour: intensity and category determine how often you reach for the device.
  2. Nicotine strength: higher values increase the effect and the risk of dependence, especially in combination with attractive flavours.
  3. Device type: disposables and pod systems deliver consistent output; with refillable systems you choose liquid and strength more deliberately.
  4. Frequency: regular puffs throughout the day add up.
  5. Situation: people often vape more in company than alone.

Regulation: what vapers in Switzerland need to know

The political debate about vaping flavours and disposable e-cigarettes is ongoing in Switzerland, as reported by SRF (in German), among others. Youth protection is at the centre. There is no general flavour ban in Switzerland. The most important rules in force (as of October 2026):

  • Sale only from age 18: The Tobacco Products Act (TabPG) has applied since 1 October 2024. E-cigarettes with and without nicotine may only be sold to adults – with age verification, including online.
  • E-cigarette tax: Since 1 October 2024, disposable e-cigarettes are taxed at CHF 1.00 per ml (including nicotine-free ones), and nicotine-containing liquids and refills at CHF 0.20 per ml, plus 8.1% VAT. Details are available under Vape tax in Switzerland.
  • Disposable e-cigarettes: Not banned nationally; Parliament has called for a ban, but when it will take effect is still open. The cantons of Valais and Geneva already ban disposable vapes, and other cantons are discussing it. Our article Disposable vape ban: which cantons? explains the current situation.
  • Tank volume: According to the Federal Supreme Court (14.04.2026), a disposable device may hold a maximum of 2 ml, and this volume must not be extended by a connected cartridge or additional tank. Hybrid and so-called big-puff devices can therefore no longer be sold.
  • Advertising: Stricter advertising restrictions from the TabPG revision (popular initiative “Children without tobacco advertising”) are expected to take effect in the first half of 2027.

For you as an adult vaper, this means: flavoured liquids and pods remain available. However, keep yourself regularly informed about cantonal rules before stocking up on disposable devices.

Choosing flavours in practice

Many vapers stick with the same two or three flavours for years. If you want to try something new, a structured approach works best:

  1. Clarify your preferences: sweet, fruity or cool? This basic question saves time and money.
  2. Think in categories: test one example each from fruit, dessert and menthol to get to know your profile.
  3. Choose branded products: liquids and pods from well-known manufacturers with transparent labelling give you a fair picture.
  4. Vary within your favourite category: if you like berries, try strawberry, raspberry and blueberry one after another.
  5. Take notes: a short list of impressions helps you build your personal flavour profile.

Tip: With refillable pods, empty the pod completely before changing flavour or use a new pod. Otherwise, residues of the old liquid will distort the taste.

Only buy liquids and devices from retailers that clearly state origin, ingredients and nicotine content. Also pay attention to the nicotine strength: intense flavours combined with high nicotine levels can be overwhelming and cause headaches or nausea. With new combinations, it is better to start with a lower strength. General advice on use can be found in the article Vape safety.

Why the flavour debate needs nuance

The public debate on vaping flavours is often split into two camps: some see flavours mainly as a lure for young people, others emphasise enjoyment for adults. Both sides have a point. Flavours make e-cigarettes more attractive for adults – and this very attractiveness is why youth protection and age verification are so important.

Sensible regulation distinguishes between product types and consistently prevents sales to minors. The market is moving towards rechargeable pod systems with refillable or replaceable pods and transparent labelling anyway, as the vape trends 2026 also show. Adult vapers want variety, but they also want to know what they are consuming.

One thing remains important: nicotine is addictive, and e-cigarettes are not risk-free either. If you do not smoke, do not start.

Frequently asked questions about vaping flavours

Which flavours are permitted for vapes in Switzerland?

There is no general flavour ban in Switzerland. Flavoured e-cigarettes and liquids may be sold, but only to people aged 18 and over and with age verification.

Are there plans to ban disposable vapes or flavours?

Parliament has called for a national ban on disposable e-cigarettes; when it will take effect is still open. The cantons of Valais and Geneva already ban disposable vapes. A general flavour ban has not been decided.

How do flavours affect the risk of dependence?

Pleasant flavours can lead to vaping more often and more intensely. This increases the amount of nicotine absorbed. Nicotine is addictive, regardless of the flavour.

How do I try new flavours sensibly?

Test different categories step by step, use an emptied or new pod with refillable systems and only buy products with transparent labelling. With new combinations, start with a lower nicotine strength.

Note: Nicotine products are for adults aged 18 and over only. Nicotine is addictive. This is not legal or tax advice.
