In short: In Switzerland, a can of snus or nicotine pouches usually costs CHF 5 to 7 and typically contains 20 pouches. One pouch therefore costs around 25 to 35 centimes (Rappen). If you use 10 pouches a day, you pay about CHF 2.50 to 3.50 per day, or roughly CHF 75 to 105 per month. Of this, 10% of the retail price goes to the Swiss Confederation as tobacco tax.
"How much does snus actually cost?" is a simple question – but the answer depends on three things: the price of the can, the number of pouches in the can and how many pouches you use per day. In this guide, we work it out properly with real Swiss prices (as of October 2026): per pouch, per day, per month and per year. You will also learn how much tax is in a can and how volume discounts, shipping costs and bulk packs change the price per pouch.
How much does a can of snus cost in Switzerland?
In Switzerland, most cans of snus (with tobacco) and nicotine pouches (tobacco-free) cost between CHF 5 and CHF 7. Special and import editions cost more, bulk packs less. In its report on the tobacco market of 19 December 2025, the Federal Council cites as examples a can of Siberia Red (16 g) and a can of VELO Crispy Peppermint (14.2 g), each with a retail price of CHF 5.20.
A can usually contains 20 pouches. Some products have fewer or more portions – the exact number is always printed on the can. The price per pouch follows a simple formula:
Price per pouch = can price ÷ number of pouches
Here is how this works out for well-known products in the Snustrend range (single-can price, as of 26.10.2026, calculated with 20 pouches per can):
| Product | Type | Price per can | Price per pouch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Siberia Red White Dry Slim | Snus (tobacco) | CHF 5.40 | approx. 27 Rp. |
| Odens Cold Extreme White Dry Slim | Snus (tobacco) | CHF 5.50 | approx. 28 Rp. |
| VELO Freezing Peppermint | Nicotine pouch | CHF 5.40 (currently on sale for 4.95) | approx. 27 Rp. (sale approx. 25 Rp.) |
| ZYN Cool Mint Strong Slim | Nicotine pouch | CHF 6.90 | approx. 35 Rp. |
| Skruf Superwhite No. 52 Fresh Mint | Nicotine pouch | CHF 6.90 | approx. 35 Rp. |
| VELO Icy Berries (Swiss Edition) | Nicotine pouch | CHF 9.90 | approx. 50 Rp. |
| Siberia Red White Dry 500 g | Snus (bulk pack) | CHF 129.00 | approx. 21 Rp. (calculated approx. 625 pouches of 0.8 g) |
Important: the price per pouch tells you nothing about strength. A cheap pouch with 28 mg of nicotine is not "better value" than an expensive one with 6 mg – it is simply much stronger. Our guide Snus dosage: which strength is right for me? explains how many mg suit you.
How much does snus cost per day and per month?
For daily and monthly costs, what matters most is how many pouches you use. There is no official average figure for Switzerland. We therefore calculate with different quantities and four typical prices per pouch (month = 30 days, year = 365 days, values rounded):
| Pouches per day | 21 Rp./pouch (bulk pack) |
27 Rp./pouch (can CHF 5.40) |
35 Rp./pouch (can CHF 6.90) |
50 Rp./pouch (can CHF 9.90) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | CHF 0.62 / day CHF 19 / month |
CHF 0.81 / day CHF 24 / month |
CHF 1.04 / day CHF 31 / month |
CHF 1.49 / day CHF 45 / month |
| 5 | CHF 1.03 / day CHF 31 / month |
CHF 1.35 / day CHF 41 / month |
CHF 1.73 / day CHF 52 / month |
CHF 2.48 / day CHF 74 / month |
| 10 | CHF 2.06 / day CHF 62 / month |
CHF 2.70 / day CHF 81 / month |
CHF 3.45 / day CHF 104 / month |
CHF 4.95 / day CHF 149 / month |
| 15 | CHF 3.10 / day CHF 93 / month |
CHF 4.05 / day CHF 122 / month |
CHF 5.18 / day CHF 155 / month |
CHF 7.43 / day CHF 223 / month |
| 20 (1 can) | CHF 4.13 / day CHF 124 / month |
CHF 5.40 / day CHF 162 / month |
CHF 6.90 / day CHF 207 / month |
CHF 9.90 / day CHF 297 / month |
Over a year, this means: 10 pouches a day at 27 centimes cost around CHF 990 per year, at 35 centimes around CHF 1'260. If you use a whole can every day, you end up at CHF 2'000 to 2'500 per year.
The calculation also shows that the biggest lever is not the brand but the quantity. Fewer pouches per day cut costs more than any discount – and also mean less nicotine.
How much tax is in a can of snus?
In Switzerland, snus and tobacco-free nicotine pouches are taxed like chewing tobacco and snuff. The tobacco tax is 10% of the retail price (FOCBS tobacco tax information sheet, as of 01.03.2026; Federal Council report of 19.12.2025). There is no tax based on weight or nicotine content. On top of that comes VAT of 8.1%, which is already included in the shelf price.
| Can price | Tobacco tax (10%) | Tax per pouch (20 pouches) |
|---|---|---|
| CHF 5.20 | CHF 0.52 | approx. 2.6 Rp. |
| CHF 5.40 | CHF 0.54 | approx. 2.7 Rp. |
| CHF 6.90 | CHF 0.69 | approx. 3.5 Rp. |
According to the Federal Council, the taxed quantity of snus and nicotine pouches rose from around 80'000 kg in 2015 to around 455'000 kg in 2024. There are motions in Parliament to tax these products more heavily. As of October 2026, the 10% rate still applies. If this changes, we will update this article.
For comparison with e-cigarettes: since October 2024, they have been taxed per millilitre of liquid – you can find the calculation in Vape tax in Switzerland: what 1 ml costs.
Is snus with tobacco more expensive than nicotine pouches?
Not as a rule. Both product groups sit in the same price band of about CHF 5 to 7 per can and are taxed the same way. Differences come mainly from brand, edition and format:
- Brand and edition: special editions such as the VELO Swiss Edition cost considerably more than the standard products of the same brand.
- Format: Mini, Slim and Large pouches often cost the same per can but contain different amounts of filling and nicotine. More on this in the guide Snus formats: Mini, Slim and Large.
- Nicotine-free pouches: they cost about as much per can as nicotine pouches, for example nicotine-free pouches from Zeronito from CHF 5.70.
You can find a direct price comparison of the two biggest pouch brands in ZYN vs. VELO: strength, flavour and price per pouch.
How can you lower the price per pouch?
Three factors change the real price per pouch: volume discounts, shipping costs and bulk packs. At Snustrend (as of October 2026), the following tiers apply to the brands VELO, Siberia, Odens, Pablo, Cuba, Kurwa, Iceberg, ZYN, XQS and Edel: −3% from 10 cans, −5% from 30 cans, −10% from 60 cans. Economy shipping costs CHF 8.90, or CHF 4.90 from an order value of CHF 60.
| Order (can CHF 5.40) | Discount | Shipping | Total | Price per pouch incl. shipping |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 can | – | CHF 8.90 | CHF 14.30 | approx. 72 Rp. |
| 10 cans | −3% | CHF 8.90 | CHF 61.28 | approx. 31 Rp. |
| 12 cans | −3% | CHF 4.90 | CHF 67.76 | approx. 28 Rp. |
| 60 cans | −10% | CHF 4.90 | CHF 296.50 | approx. 25 Rp. |
| Siberia 500 g bulk pack | – | CHF 4.90 | CHF 133.90 | approx. 21 Rp. (calculated 625 pouches) |
For a single can, shipping makes up more than half of the price. Also interesting: 12 cans are cheaper per pouch than 10 cans, because the basket goes over CHF 60 and shipping drops to CHF 4.90. By weight, the 500 g bulk packs are around 23% cheaper than the same amount in single cans (Siberia Red White Dry: CHF 0.258 instead of 0.338 per gram).
Stocking up only pays off, however, if you store your supply properly and use it up within its shelf life. Do not buy more than you actually need.
