In short: Mini, Slim, and Normal/Large mainly differ in pouch weight: Mini usually weighs around 0.45–0.5 g, Slim around 0.65 g, Normal/Regular/Large 0.8–1.0 g. With the same mg/g specification, a Mini contains significantly less nicotine per pouch. Example Siberia Red White Dry (43 mg/g): Mini approx. 19 mg, Slim approx. 28 mg, Normal approx. 34 mg per pouch.
Each can has a format: Mini, Slim, Normal, Regular, Large, or Original. Many only think of the size in the mouth. However, what is more important is what the format means for the nicotine amount per pouch. In this guide, we will show you with real product data from our range how the formats differ, how to calculate the mg per pouch yourself, and how to switch formats without accidentally becoming stronger or weaker.
What Snus formats are there?
The format names are not legally standardized. Each manufacturer uses them slightly differently. In practice, however, four groups have emerged. The weight specifications below come from specialist literature and from the manufacturers' product specifications.
| Format | Typical pouch weight | Shape | Typical for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini | approx. 0.45–0.5 g | small and short | very discreet, short breaks, entry into a strong brand |
| Slim | approx. 0.6–0.7 g | long and narrow | very common with Nicotine Pouches (All White) |
| Normal / Regular / Large | approx. 0.8–1.0 g | wider, classic pouch shape | classic snus, original portion, many strong varieties |
| Maxi | up to approx. 1.7 g | very large | especially in Scandinavia, rarely in Switzerland |
Important: Normal, Regular, and Large usually refer to the same standard format. Some brands call it "Original" – but this often refers to the pouch type (moist, brown), not the size. More on this below.
Is a Mini snus weaker than a Slim?
With the same formulation: yes. The reason is simple math. Manufacturers often specify strength in mg nicotine per gram (mg/g). How much nicotine is in a single pouch then depends on the weight of the pouch:
Nicotine per pouch (mg) = mg/g × pouch weight (g)
A Mini weighing 0.45 g thus contains only about half the nicotine of a 1-g pouch with the same mg/g specification. This is particularly evident with the Siberia and Odens varieties in our shop, as they are available in several formats with identical formulations:
| Product | Format | mg/g | Pouch weight | Nicotine per pouch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Siberia Red White Dry Mini | Mini | 43 | 0.45 g | approx. 19.4 mg |
| Siberia Red White Dry Slim | Slim | 43 | 0.65 g | approx. 28 mg |
| Siberia Red White Dry | Normal | 43 | 0.8 g | approx. 34.4 mg |
| Siberia X-Tremely Black Original | Normal (Original Portion) | 43 | 1.0 g | approx. 43 mg |
| Odens Cold Extreme White Dry Mini | Mini | 22 | 0.45 g | approx. 9.9 mg |
| Odens Extreme No3 | Normal | 22 | 1.0 g | approx. 22 mg |
Values according to manufacturer or product specifications, rounded. The actual fill quantity may vary slightly depending on the batch.
This means: If you are used to Siberia Red White Dry in the Normal format and switch to Mini, you will get about 44% less nicotine per pouch. Conversely, switching from Mini to Normal can almost double the amount. This is where most "surprises" happen when changing formats.
But beware: Not all manufacturers work with the same mg/g specification across all formats. Some deliberately fill Minis more concentrated or only offer the weaker levels in Mini format. For many Nicotine Pouches (for example, VELO or NOIS), the strength is directly stated as mg per pouch on the can – then the format is no longer decisive for the nicotine amount. We explain everything about the two specifications in the guide Nicotine Pouch Strength Explained: mg per Pouch.
How do I calculate the pouch weight myself?
If the pouch weight is not on the can, you can easily calculate it: Contents of the can in grams ÷ number of pouches. A can with 16 g and 20 pouches results in 0.8 g per pouch. A can with 13 g and 20 pouches results in 0.65 g – typical Slim. Then you calculate with the mg/g specification as above.
- If the can states "mg/g" → multiply by the pouch weight.
- If the can states "mg/pouch" → that is already the amount per pouch.
- If only a level is stated (e.g., "Strong", dots, "X-Strong") → these levels are not standardized and not comparable between brands.
Does the format affect nicotine absorption?
The most important factor is the nicotine amount in the pouch – and as shown, this strongly depends on the format. How quickly and how much of it is actually released also depends on the pouch type: In a study by Lunell and colleagues (2020), around 56–59% of the nicotine was released from tobacco-free Nicotine Pouches with 3 or 6 mg after 60 minutes, while only about 32% was released from a classic tobacco snus (Original Portion, 8 mg).
There are currently very few independent studies that specifically compare Mini, Slim, and Large with identical fillings. Statements like "Slim feels more intense" are usually based on personal impressions. It can be firmly stated: A larger pouch contains more nicotine with the same formulation and takes up more space. Those who want to understand differences in duration of effect and release between moist and dry snus can find more in the article Dry vs. Moist Snus.
What is the difference between format and type (Original, White, White Dry)?
The format describes the size of the pouch. The type describes the material and moisture. Both are often mixed on cans:
| Term | Means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Original Portion | Pouch is moistened during production, brown and moist | General Original |
| White Portion | Pouch is not moistened, lighter and drier | Siberia Blue Ice Cold Power White |
| White Dry | particularly dry pouch (especially with Siberia and Odens) | White Dry Portion |
| All White | tobacco-free Nicotine Pouches, white | ZYN Cool Mint Strong Slim |
A product always has both: "Siberia Red White Dry Slim" is type White Dry in format Slim.
Which format suits me?
- Mini is suitable if you prefer it as discreet as possible or want to use a strong brand with less nicotine per pouch. Examples: VELO Bright Spearmint 4mg Mini, Odens Cold Extreme White Dry Mini. All Mini products
- Slim is the all-rounder and very common with Nicotine Pouches, with many varieties and strengths. Examples: NOIS Mint 20mg Slim, ZYN Cool Mint Strong Slim. All Slim products
- Normal / Regular / Large is the classic format for traditional snus and many strong varieties. Examples: Puck Spearing Extra Strong Large, General Original. Large · Regular
When switching formats, choose based on mg per pouch and not by the name of the strength level. Which strength generally suits your consumption is shown in our guide Snus Dosage: Which Strength (mg) is Right for Me?. You can find the strongest products by mg per pouch in the ranking The Strongest Nicotine Pouches 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is Regular the same as Large or Normal?
Usually yes. Regular, Normal, and Large generally refer to the standard format with around 0.8–1.0 g per pouch. However, the terms are not standardized. If in doubt, check the pouch weight (contents of the can ÷ number of pouches).
Is a Mini weaker than a Slim?
With the same mg/g specification, yes, because the pouch is lighter. Example Siberia Red White Dry with 43 mg/g: Mini approx. 19.4 mg, Slim approx. 28 mg per pouch. If the strength is stated as mg per pouch on the can, the format is not decisive for the nicotine amount.
Which Snus format is the most discreet?
Mini is the smallest and is least noticeable under the lip, followed by Slim. Normal and Large pouches are wider and can be visible.
Does the format affect nicotine absorption?
Primarily through the nicotine amount: A larger pouch contains more nicotine with the same formulation. Additionally, the type plays a role – in a study (Lunell et al. 2020), around 56–59% of the nicotine was released from Nicotine Pouches after 60 minutes, while around 32% was released from classic tobacco snus. There are hardly any independent studies comparing formats with the same filling.
Can I switch formats without changing strength?
Yes, if you choose based on mg per pouch. If you want to switch from a Normal pouch with 22 mg to Mini, you need a higher mg/g specification in Mini to reach a similar amount. If in doubt, start weaker.
How do I calculate the mg per pouch?
Multiply the mg/g specification by the pouch weight in grams. Example: 22 mg/g × 0.45 g = approx. 9.9 mg per pouch. You obtain the pouch weight by dividing the contents of the can in grams by the number of pouches.
