As of September 7, 2026. When it comes to news about snus, nicotine pouches, and e-cigarettes in Switzerland, it is worth taking a closer look at the data. Some regulations are already in force, while further advertising restrictions are still to come. This overview provides context on current developments.
Why this topic is relevant in autumn 2026
Parliament passed the revision of the Tobacco Products Act on June 20, 2025. According to the current schedule of the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), it is expected to enter into force at the beginning of 2027. The consultation period for the implementing legislation ran until March 20, 2026. The basis is the popular initiative for the protection of children and young people against tobacco advertising, which was adopted in 2022. Source: FOPH on the legislative revision.
What is already in effect
The Tobacco Products Act and the associated ordinance have been in effect since October 1, 2024. The minimum age for the sale of the covered products is 18 years nationwide. Advertising on billboards as well as advertising in public transport and cinemas is already restricted. Cantons may impose stricter requirements for advertising, sales promotion, and sponsorship. Which advertising rules are expected next
The adopted revision concerns tobacco products, nicotine products, and electronic cigarettes. Planned measures include bans on advertising at points of sale and additional restrictions on the internet and in social media. For online advertising, the FOPH notes an exception for pages whose age verification systems ensure that users are of legal age.
Crucial for context: Adopted does not automatically mean in force. Early 2027 is the anticipated date cited by the FOPH. Those following developments should therefore distinguish between the current law and the next legislative stage. Details and schedule at the FOPH.
Precise rules apply to disposable e-cigarettes too
The FOPH also points to Federal Supreme Court rulings regarding tank capacity: a maximum of 2 ml is permitted for electronic disposable cigarettes containing nicotine liquid. The decisive factor is the capacity, not just the amount actually filled. According to the FOPH, this limit may not be bypassed by an attached additional 10 ml cartridge. The hybrid devices described therein do not comply with legal requirements. Classification and judgment numbers at the FOPH.
Tobacco-free does not mean risk-free
Snus contains tobacco; nicotine pouches are a different product category. Even without tobacco, nicotine can be addictive. Regarding nicotine pouches, the FOPH points to the still unknown medium- and long-term consequences and advises against consumption. Likewise, e-cigarettes are not harmless. According to the FOPH, those who do not smoke should not start. Source: FOPH on health consequences.
Those wishing to quit smoking can find support via the stop smoking service stopsmoking. For questions about nicotine addiction, medical advice is recommended.
