In short: A snus or nicotine pouch usually stays under the lip for 20 to 60 minutes. The BfR states 20 to 60 minutes, while the DKFZ mentions up to 30 minutes for nicotine pouches. In a study, a ZYN pouch released 56 to 59% of its nicotine in 60 minutes, while a tobacco snus released 32%. Keeping it longer than necessary mainly causes more irritation. Remove it before eating; saliva can be swallowed normally.
“How long do you keep snus in?” is one of the most common questions from adults starting with snus or nicotine pouches. There is no fixed rule. However, there are measurements of how much nicotine a pouch releases over time, and clear indications of when keeping it in longer is more harmful than beneficial. Here you will find the numbers and practical answers regarding saliva, eating, drinking, and sleeping.
How long do you keep snus in your mouth?
Most users keep a pouch between 20 and 60 minutes between the gums and upper lip. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) describes this exact range of “about 20 to 60 minutes.” The German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) states in its fact sheet for 2025 that nicotine pouches can be placed under the lip or in the cheek pouch for “up to 30 minutes.”
A general rule is to remove the pouch as soon as the taste diminishes or you no longer feel it. A weaker pouch does not need to stay in longer just to get “more.” If you want more effect, you are better off with an appropriate strength than with an hour of lying time. Help with this can be found in the guide Snus Dosage: Which Strength (mg) is Right for Me?.
How much nicotine does a pouch release over what time?
The most well-known measurement comes from Lunell and colleagues (2020). The test subjects kept the pouches in their mouths for 60 minutes, after which it was measured how much nicotine was still in the pouch.
| Product (Study) | Nicotine in Pouch | Released after 60 Min. | Percentage |
|---|---|---|---|
| ZYN Nicotine Pouch | 3 mg | about 1.5 mg | about 56 % |
| ZYN Nicotine Pouch | 6 mg | about 3.5 mg | about 59 % |
| General Tobacco Snus | 8 mg | about 2.4 mg | about 32 % |
Source: Lunell et al., Nicotine & Tobacco Research 2020. “Released” means dissolved from the pouch – not all of it reaches the bloodstream.
This leads to three points:
- Even after an hour, the pouch is not empty. About 40% (pouch) or two-thirds (tobacco snus) of the nicotine remains in the pouch.
- The amount on the can is not the amount you absorb. A 6 mg pouch released about 3.5 mg in the study.
- The effect comes early. According to the BfR, a single 6 mg pouch already increased the heart rate by about 10 beats per minute. How quickly nicotine enters the bloodstream is explained in our article on Nicotine Absorption with Snus.
What happens if you keep snus in too long?
A pouch that stays in the same spot for a very long time can irritate the gums. The DKFZ states: Since nicotine pouches are “held in the mouth for a longer period,” it can lead to “mechanical injuries and irritations of the gums.”
Irritations can also occur with short use. In a study by the LMU Clinic Munich with the BfR (Mallock-Ohnesorg et al., 2024), the pouches were only in the mouth for 20 minutes. Afterward, redness of the oral mucosa was observed in 4 out of 15 participants with 6 mg pouches, in 3 out of 15 with 20 mg, and in 5 out of 15 with 30 mg. Even with the nicotine-free pouch, it was 1 out of 15.
What you can do:
- Switch sides (left, right, middle) instead of always stressing the same spot.
- Do not use multiple pouches directly in a row at the same spot.
- Try a smaller format: Mini pouches are thinner and less noticeable. More about this in the article Snus Formats: Mini, Slim, and Large.
- If you notice white spots, wounds, or changes that do not heal, see a dentist.
If it burns strongly, it is usually due to strength, pH value, or flavor – not just the lying time. Causes and tips can be found in the guide Why Does Snus Burn?.
Can you swallow saliva while using snus?
Yes, normal saliva can be swallowed. With white nicotine pouches and white portion snus, little juice is produced, so spitting is not necessary. Moist original portion snus produces more brown juice – many then keep it in for a shorter time or swallow less.
However, swallowing too much nicotine-containing saliva can be unpleasant. The package insert for Nicorette gum explicitly mentions hiccups as a side effect that can “specifically occur” when nicotine is swallowed. A queasy feeling in the stomach is also possible. In that case, it helps to remove the pouch, drink water, and use a milder strength next time.
What to do if you accidentally swallow a snus?
If an adult accidentally swallows a pouch, nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness, or palpitations may occur. Do not induce vomiting, stay calm, and monitor the symptoms. For severe complaints: call Tox Info Suisse at 145, in case of emergency 144.
It is particularly dangerous for children and pets. The DKFZ warns: “Especially for children, nicotine poisoning can be life-threatening.” A US study (Pediatrics 2025) reported a 763% increase in reported cases involving nicotine pouches among children under six years old between 2020 and 2023. Therefore: always keep cans closed and out of reach, and do not leave used pouches lying around. If a child has taken a pouch in their mouth or swallowed it, call 145 immediately.
Can you eat, drink, or sleep with snus in your mouth?
| Situation | Recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Eating | Remove pouch beforehand | It can dissolve or be swallowed. |
| Drinking water | No problem | Neutral drink, can relieve burning. |
| Coffee, juice, soda | Possible, but effect is likely weaker | Acidic drinks lower the pH in the mouth and can slow nicotine absorption. |
| Sleeping | Not recommended | Risk of swallowing the pouch; very long lying time in one spot. |
| Exercising | Better to remove | Nicotine increases heart rate; the pouch can shift. |
| Reusing pouch | Not intended | For hygiene reasons, take a new pouch each time. |

How long does a snus work the first time?
The first time, a short lying time is often sufficient. If you have no nicotine experience, you should not start at all – nicotine is addictive. If you already consume nicotine and switch to pouches, it is better to start with a mild strength and remove the pouch after 10 to 20 minutes if dizziness, nausea, or strong palpitations occur. These signs mean: too much nicotine for you. Mild options include ZYN Citrus 3 mg Mini, ZYN Black Cherry 3 mg Mini, or VELO Simply Spearmint 4 mg Mini. You can find all mild products in the “Mild (up to 8 mg)” filter.
Important: Keeping it in for a shorter time is the easiest way to reduce the amount absorbed. Keeping it in longer to “squeeze out” a weak pouch brings hardly any benefits.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How long should you keep a nicotine pouch in?
Usually 20 to 30 minutes, at most about an hour. The DKFZ states up to 30 minutes for nicotine pouches, while the BfR states 20 to 60 minutes. Remove it as soon as the taste diminishes or you feel uncomfortable.
Is a snus empty after an hour?
No. In the study by Lunell et al. (2020), ZYN pouches released 56 to 59% of their nicotine in 60 minutes, while a tobacco snus released 32%. The rest remains in the pouch.
Do you have to spit with snus?
No. Normal saliva can be swallowed. However, swallowing too much nicotine-containing saliva can cause hiccups or a queasy feeling in the stomach.
What happens if you swallow a snus?
In adults, nausea, abdominal pain, or dizziness may occur. Do not induce vomiting. For severe complaints and always in children, call Tox Info Suisse at 145, in case of emergency 144.
Can you sleep with snus?
This is not recommended. The pouch can dissolve and be swallowed, and the very long lying time in one spot can irritate the gums.
Can you use a snus twice?
This is not intended. For hygiene reasons, it is best to take a new pouch each time.
