The Swiss government has decided on a moderate increase in the tobacco tax, which will come into effect on January 1, 2025. This change also directly affects snus consumers. Here you will find all the important details regarding the price adjustment and its impact.
The most important facts about the tax increase
On October 16, 2024, the Federal Council passed an amendment to the Tobacco Tax Act. For snus, this specifically means a price increase of about 40 centimes per retail pack. This increase is part of a broader tax adjustment affecting various tobacco products.
Why is the tax increase happening?
The increase is part of the federal strategy for budget consolidation for 2025. The additional revenue, estimated at 45 million francs, is intended to help achieve a balanced federal budget. Interestingly, the decision was not unanimous - while the Economic Affairs and Taxation Committee of the National Council (WAK-N) supported the proposal, the committee of the Council of States (WAK-S) originally recommended postponing the increase.
What does this mean for snus consumers?
-
Price increase: From January 2025, you should expect an increase of about 40 centimes per can
-
Moderate adjustment: The Federal Council did not exhaust its maximum scope for increases
-
Long-term planning: The increase is part of a larger tax reform in the tobacco sector
Comparison to other tobacco products
The tax increase does not only affect snus, but also:
-
Cigars and cigarillos
-
Fine-cut and hookah tobacco
-
Other smoking tobacco and heated tobacco products
It is interesting to note that conventional cigarettes are excluded from this increase, as the maximum tax level for them was already reached in 2013.
Conclusion and outlook
The price increase for snus is moderate compared to previous tax adjustments. Nevertheless, consumers should prepare for the price change. We at snustrend.com will continue to monitor developments closely and keep you updated on all important changes.
