In short: You can take snus and nicotine pouches on the plane in both hand luggage and checked baggage – there are no special aviation security rules for them. Vapes, on the other hand, belong only in hand luggage (BAZL). The destination is critical: In the EU, the sale of tobacco snus is prohibited except in Sweden; in France, nicotine pouches have even been banned since April 1, 2026. Returning to Switzerland, you can bring in 250 g of tobacco products duty-free.

Vacation, ski weekend, or business trip: Anyone who uses snus or nicotine pouches asks the same questions before every trip. Can I take the can in my hand luggage? What are the rules at the destination? And how much can I bring back to Switzerland? Here you will find the answers with sources – compact and with a country table.

Can you take snus and nicotine pouches on the plane?

Yes. Snus and tobacco-free nicotine pouches are neither liquids nor hazardous goods. There is no specific regulation for them in aviation security rules. Therefore, you can transport the cans in your hand luggage and in your suitcase. The 100 ml rule for liquids does not apply to moist snus.

Whether you are allowed to use a pouch on board is decided by the airline. Smoking and vaping are prohibited on board; there is no uniform rule for pouches. If in doubt, ask the crew. And remember: It’s usually not the airplane that’s the problem, but the law in the destination country.

What are the rules for vapes and e-cigarettes on the plane?

The rules for e-cigarettes are stricter because they contain lithium batteries. The Federal Office of Civil Aviation (BAZL) states:

  • E-cigarettes and lithium-ion batteries may be transported exclusively in hand luggage – not in checked baggage.
  • Each device and battery must be protected against short circuits (original packaging or protective case), and if possible, turned off.
  • Maximum 100 Wh per battery; a total of no more than 15 battery-operated devices per person (including mobile phones, laptops, smartwatches).
  • Charging and using on board is prohibited.

Refill liquids are considered liquids at security checks: generally containers up to 100 ml in a transparent 1-liter bag. Some airlines have additional restrictions – check your airline's rules before flying. Rechargeable pod systems like the ELFA Pro are suitable for travel: compact, and the pods can be packaged separately.

Where is snus allowed in Europe? An overview of the countries

It is important to distinguish between snus with tobacco and tobacco-free nicotine pouches. The EU Tobacco Products Directive 2014/40/EU obliges member states in Article 17 to prohibit the marketing of tobacco for oral use. The exception applies to Sweden. Each country regulates tobacco-free nicotine pouches itself – and this is changing rapidly.

Can I take snus to Germany?

In Germany, the sale of tobacco snus is prohibited (EU directive, Article 17). According to the Scientific Services of the Bundestag (brief information from 09.10.2024), tobacco-free nicotine pouches are currently not allowed to be marketed: Authorities classify them as "Novel Food," and nicotine is not approved as a food ingredient. There is no specific law for pouches, so they are often considered a grey area in everyday life.

These prohibitions are aimed at trade. Sources do not mention an explicit possession or consumption ban for private individuals. Therefore, only take a small amount for personal use, do not buy anything for others, and ask the German customs if in doubt. More on this in the article Is snus legal in Germany?

What applies in Austria?

Austria has reorganized the rules as of April 1, 2026. According to the Ministry of Finance, nicotine pouches may only be sold in tobacco shops, and online sales are prohibited. Tobacco snus remains prohibited for sale due to the EU directive. Therefore, those traveling from Switzerland can only buy pouches in Austria at the tobacco shop – or bring their personal supply from home.

Can I take nicotine pouches to France?

No. France is the strictest neighboring country. Since April 1, 2026, nicotine pouches have been banned there – according to service-public.gouv.fr, this applies to consumption, acquisition, possession, sale, import, and transfer. This also affects tourists and cross-border commuters. Therefore, leave the can in Switzerland. All details, including fines and cross-border commuters, can be found in the article Nicotine pouches banned in France.

How much snus can I bring into Switzerland?

Upon returning, the duty-free allowances of the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG) apply. They apply per person aged 17 and over:

Product Duty-free Above that
Cigarettes, cigars, tobacco heaters, nicotine cartridges 250 pieces CHF 0.25 per piece
Other tobacco products (e.g., tobacco snus, snuff) 250 g CHF 0.10 per gram
Disposable e-cigarettes 25 pieces CHF 2.50 per piece
Nicotine-containing liquids 250 ml CHF 0.25 per ml
All goods combined (VAT) Value up to CHF 150 per person per day VAT on the total value

A calculation example: A can of snus weighs about 13 to 24 grams depending on the brand. Therefore, 250 g roughly corresponds to 10 to 19 cans. For tobacco-free nicotine pouches, the authorities do not specify a separate tobacco duty-free amount; the relevant limit is the value limit of CHF 150, which has been in effect since January 1, 2025 (previously CHF 300). In case of doubt, the BAZG provides information. An adjustment of the duty-free amounts for e-cigarettes is in preparation (revision of the Tobacco Products Ordinance, effective date open) – more on this in the article Vape tax Switzerland.
