If you are an adult who already uses nicotine, you have more choice in Switzerland today than ever before: classic snus with tobacco, tobacco-free nicotine pouches, nasal snuff and vapes. But this variety does not make the choice any easier. This article shows you which criteria count, which product types exist and which alternative suits which type of user.

Criteria for high-quality and affordable snus alternatives

Amount of nicotine. The most important point is the amount of nicotine per pouch or per ml. Choose a strength that matches your usual consumption and do not start higher. You can find an overview in the article Snus dosage: which strength (mg) suits me?.

With or without tobacco. Classic snus contains tobacco and has a typical tobacco flavour. Tobacco-free nicotine pouches (All White) contain plant fibres and nicotine instead of tobacco. Both contain nicotine and both are addictive.

Flavour and format. The choice ranges from mint and menthol to fruit and berries, through to coffee, liquorice and classic tobacco notes. Pouches come in Mini, Slim and Large. We explain the differences in Snus formats explained: Mini, Slim and Large.

Value for money. High quality does not automatically mean expensive. What matters is the price per pouch, not just the price per can. The article How much does snus cost? Price per pouch, day and month shows you how to calculate it.

Legal situation. In Switzerland, snus, nicotine pouches and e-cigarettes may only be sold to people aged 18 and over since 1 October 2024. For disposable vapes, there are also cantonal bans.

The main snus alternatives at a glance

Tobacco snus

Classic Swedish snus offers the traditional tobacco flavour and a direct nicotine effect. The moist pouches release flavour and nicotine quickly. Brands such as Siberia or Odens are known for strong varieties. Snus has been legal in Switzerland since 2019.

Tobacco-free nicotine pouches

Nicotine pouches are placed under the upper lip like snus but contain no tobacco. They are discreet, have hardly any smell and come in many strengths. Well-known brands include VELO, ZYN and Pablo. You can find a direct comparison of two major brands in ZYN vs. VELO.

Nasal snuff

Snuff is taken through the nose and has a long tradition in Switzerland. The effect sets in quickly; handling takes a little practice. There are different grinds and flavours, for example from Pöschl. You can find the full selection under Snuff.

Vapes

Vapes vaporise liquids with or without nicotine. There are two main types:

  • Disposable vapes: ready to use straight away, but banned in the cantons of Valais and Geneva. Since 1 October 2024, a tax of CHF 1.00 per ml applies. More on this in Disposable vape ban in Switzerland.
  • Pod systems: rechargeable devices with replaceable pods or refillable tanks, for example ELFA Pro. Liquids containing nicotine are taxed at CHF 0.20 per ml. We do the maths in the article Vape tax in Switzerland.

You can find the selection under Pod systems, Disposable vapes and Liquids.

Comparison table of snus alternatives

Product type Tobacco Flavour variety Discretion Handling
Tobacco snus yes medium very high easy
Nicotine pouches no very high very high easy
Nasal snuff yes medium low takes practice
Disposable vapes no very high medium easy, banned in some cantons
Pod systems no very high medium charging and buying pods or liquid

Pouches can be used discreetly anywhere; vapes need charging and produce visible vapour. Snuff is more suited to home or outdoors. Rechargeable pod systems cost more at first than disposable vapes, but afterwards you only buy pods or liquid.

Which alternative suits which type of user?

You want maximum discretion: Slim or Mini pouches are barely visible and hardly smell. Suitable for the office or public transport.

You like classic tobacco flavour: tobacco snus or nasal snuff deliver the traditional taste.

You are looking for a wide range of flavours: modern nicotine pouches and vapes offer the most flavours, from mint to fruit to dessert notes.

You are watching the price: compare the price per pouch or per ml. Larger orders or multipacks often reduce the unit price.

You are experienced and want a high strength: you can find strong pouches in our ranking The strongest nicotine pouches 2026. High strengths are only intended for very experienced users.

If you do not smoke and do not use nicotine, do not start.

At Snustrend you will find snus and nicotine pouches in many strengths and flavours, as well as nasal snuff, pod systems and liquids. Strength and format are stated on every product page. Products are sold only to adults aged 18 and over.

Frequently asked questions

Is snus legal in Switzerland?

Yes. Snus has been legal in Switzerland since 2019. Since 1 October 2024, snus and nicotine pouches may only be sold to people aged 18 and over. More on this in Snus legislation in Switzerland.

What is the difference between snus and nicotine pouches?

Snus contains tobacco; nicotine pouches are tobacco-free and use plant fibres as a carrier. Both are placed under the upper lip, both contain nicotine and are addictive.

Are vapes an alternative to snus?

Vapes are a different product type: they vaporise liquid instead of a pouch sitting in your mouth. Disposable vapes are banned in the cantons of Valais and Geneva; rechargeable pod systems are available throughout Switzerland. Vapes with nicotine are addictive too.

What are the risks of snus alternatives?

All products containing nicotine are addictive and not risk-free. Snus can put strain on the gums and oral mucosa; data on the long-term effects of nicotine pouches and vapes is still lacking. Pregnant women, minors and people with cardiovascular disease should not use nicotine products.

Where can I buy snus alternatives in Switzerland?

For example online at Snustrend: there you will find nicotine pouches, snus, nasal snuff, pod systems and liquids with clear information on strength and format. Products are sold only to adults aged 18 and over.

Note: Nicotine products are for adults aged 18 and over only. Nicotine is addictive. This is not legal or tax advice.
